Tree Branch Buttons

There is going to be a bit of a delay on the second “Healing Home” post. I came down with a cold over the weekend (ironically enough) and didn’t feel like sitting in front of the computer.

Here are some little tree branch buttons that we made this weekend. I had been thinking about doing this for a while now and when Steve happened to be outside using the circular saw, I decided the time was ripe. I found a button that was around the size I was looking for and going off of that measurement we scouted about the yard looking for appropriate fallen branches. What with living in the woods and all, we were not at a loss for options! Once we found some with potential, Steve cut off a bunch of thin “coins”. Then we brought them in and dried them by the wood stove, turning them often. By the end of the weekend they seemed ready to go.
The kids did most of the sanding. We drilled the holes using a slender drill bit and my button as a template. Then we finished them all with Mamakopp’s All Natural Wood Creme (if you get a chance, you should check out her sweet wooden creatures, they are most delightful!).

We will be making more of these soon. They were so simple and provided pleasant and useful work for everyone in the family.

All of the ones pictured above were made from birch branches. I’m really looking forward to experimenting with different types of wood!
