I’m a Sucker

It’s true. How else could I allow myself to be sucked into a project requiring 360 monotonous rows of nothing but pure stockinette stitch?? No shaping, not styling, no nothing, just knit a row, purl a row, and on and on for eternity (or certainly what felt like eternity).
Could it possibly have something to do with a combination of pregnancy hormones and the incredibly sweet thumb sucking newborn who’s image accompanies the pattern??

Yeah, I suspect it may have been something like that.

I would say that it’s a good marketing gimmick, but it didn’t work out so well in my case since I used all yarns that I already had and got the pattern out of a book from the library. That’s right, those sneaky newborn flaunters didn’t make a dime off of me this time! Ha-ha!

hmm…the affect is not quite the same, is it?

I didn’t have enough of any one yarn to do the whole thing, so the bulk of it is a combination of O-wool and Treliske organic yarns in natural. Even using both of them I was cutting it awfully close. I had about 2 inches of yarn left when I finished up the seaming. The trim is a Paton’s merino in sage.

I considered leaving off the pom-pom, but decided it was alarmingly Klan like that way. I’m actually glad that I put it on, because as much as I hate to admit it, it’s really pretty cute, and if a newborn can’t get away with pom-poms, well then, who can?

The pattern is called ‘Papoose’ and it comes from the book “Knitting for Two: 20 Simple Designs for Expectant and New Mommies and Babies” by Erica Knight.

It turned out rather larger then I expected and in fact, it is larger then the pattern says the finished product should be, despite the fact that I did a swatch to check my gauge. I don’t really mind though, as my babies grow quickly and we could use some warm stuff for later in the winter.

    Awesome.

You do know that I, a complete stranger, check your blog multiple times per day for birth announcements (or heck, even labor signs) don’t ya? :-)

It’s beautiful, btw, wish I could knit…but alas…tis not to be.

    blessings,
    Mary

I guess I sort-of fall under the previous poster’s category (although we’ve sort-of “met” on MDC). I still don’t know how to read knitting patterns, but hope to by the time I’m ready for this book :-)

You have inspired me (a non-sewer) to teach my little ones to sew. And, in fact, together we all made little travel-sized pillows for their four cousins for Christmas. Now we are working with hand-stitching. I doubt I'll receive handmade gifts as adorable as your boys have made you, but if I do, I'll think of you with gratitude!!
And I too, complete stranger, check for birth announcments. Blessings to your family and best wishes for a smooth & uneventful delivery.

Adorable. Doesn’t it feel nice to “use up and make do?”

Count me as another “stranger” awaiting birth news.

I hope all is well and warm this evening.

It looks beautiful! I have eyed it in that book a number of times but stuck with the pompom hat and the embroidered jumper!

    Gorgeous!

It must be so satisfying to create something sweet and tender by hand while your creating something sweet and tender inside. Sort of a way to externalize the process going on inside.

Ok, that may have come out a little weird but I love what you made (and your blog). Thanks for the moments of quiet inspiration.

    That is so adorable :)

lol I’m another stranger who keeps checking back for birth announcements and admiring your lovely handwork :)

Hope the holiday season is beautiful for your family!

Hello, Im a first time visitor, directed here by my sister in law as I made the very same papoose for my baby who is now 19 months, i even used sage for the trim as we didnt know who we were having. he was born in thelaundry, went straight into the papoose and didnt really leave it until he was 4 months old and he was no small baby! best of lucky with your birth and babymoon
