Ode to the pillowcase dress….

close-up

Alright, I’ll spare you!  You already know how passionate I am about pillowcase dresses, in all of their glorious, sweet simplicity.

This pretty little pillowcase came to me via my dear friend Heather, who knew I was coveting just such a thing, and therefore kept a look out for one, because she’s fabulous like that.

Baby Roo wore this one a lot this weekend, so you get to see a wide variety of views and scenes!

I made some blue gingham bloomers for underneath.  Oh, the bloomers!  They are the sweetest thing ever.  I’m kind of sorry I didn’t make the dress shorter so you see more of them.  I used an old tablecloth (that’s right, she matches Elijah’s bow-tie).

Oh, my, goodness.  That belly! You just want to kiss it, don’t you?  Me too.  She’s all kinds of scrumptious.

If you are wondering, I’ve made a conscious decision to devote most of my sewing time to clothing for the younger children.  I’ve talked about it with the big boys, and they’re ok with that.  It’s just that at this point most anything I would make them, would look very similar to something that you could buy, well, just about anywhere.  When you are getting into cargo pants and jeans and stuff with all of the fiddly pockets and clasps and zippers, well it’s awfully time consuming and not at all the type of sewing I enjoy.  And at this point I need so much fabric to cover those long legs that it’s no longer the bargain that making things for littler people is.  It just makes sense to put my limited time and energy towards the little wardrobes that I can craft quickly and easily.  Still I’m kind of sad about it.

I’m coming up with other things to sew for them, quilts being a high priority.  I’m thinking about trying my hand at making rag rugs too.  I’m sure there will be the occasional shirt or pajama pant as well.  And of course I will continue to knit all manner of hats and sweaters for them.  Of course, of course.  Til the day my hands give out, or they break my heart by telling me they no longer want them.

To wrap up kids clothing week, I’d like to share a couple of things I have learned…

  • I accomplish a whole lot more, with a lot less frustration, when I have a dedicated work space set up.
  • I work best on a deadline.
  • The differences that my machine and I were having, are indeed irreconcilable.  Our continued association is potentially volatile.  Time for a new machine.  It’s for the greater good.  I’m open to recommendations!

oh gorgeous! i’ve found the kids week challenge very motivating too… i thoroughly recommend my basic Janome machines, they’re only the entry level models, but they perform much better than unknown-brand machines i’ve used :) good luck finding your new one!

I am finishing an oliver popover dress this week and have had the same feeling. I’ve just started sewing clothes and realized I have only a small precious amount of time until they are big kids…

She looks adorable in the dress!!!
Hopefully one day soon the two littlest here will decide on the same naptime so I can get more done. Late night is not good for me, way to many errors. I purchased a Brother CS6000i for a really good price from Amazon and it has been great so far. I also bought a friend one of the Singer Simple machines($100 model) for her 60th birthday and she loves how simple and easy it is to use (she has been making duvets for nieces and some other little people she loves). And an ex-coworker says she has had no problems with her singer simple she was given last year. The only other machine I know much personal use about is HusqvarnaViking and the two people that have them love them…one has had one for 15 years with only routing cleaning/oilings and the other uses hers to make bags and such professionally and loves it.
