Textured Shawl

Pattern: Textured Shawl Recipe (Ravelry link)

Yarn: Araucania Magallanes color # 314

I know it’s hard to believe, but this is the only yarn I’ve ever bought just because I liked it and not with a specific project in mind.  Which is kind of funny because it’s not at all what I normally gravitate towards.  It was the red that got me.  Those occasional splashes of deep dark red.  I like the thick and thin texture and lots of other things about it too, like how very warm, both visually and physically, it is.  But in the end, it was the red that made me buy it.

First it was a hat.  Which was eventually found by the way.  By Steve.  It’s what we do.  I loose things and he finds them.  We’re very compatible that way.  Though I have to say this arrangement works out rather better for me then it does for him.

Then is was a fingerless glove that got frogged.

And finally this shawl.  This shawl that I made back in September, when I was knitting for my life.

This and the yellow baby blanket were my two big, back to back, comfort knitting projects.  The two projects that I wasn’t making for any particular reason, other then to get lost in the rhythm of knitting them while diffusing my anxiety for a while.  And when this one was done, it got packed in a  box, and then tucked in a drawer and I never did take it out again.  I still hadn’t decided what exactly I was going to do with it (it doesn’t really go with, well, anything I own).  In some ways it felt like it had served it’s purpose already.

Then one night a friend who was going through a rough time, said wistfully, that some day she would take the time to knit herself a shawl.  And without even thinking, my immediate response was, “Do you like pink?!?”

Being a knitter herself she could do the blocking and weaving in of the ends that I never got to.  And so the shawl went home with her.

Which I somehow think it was meant to do all along.
