Gray day….

Everything is gray. I watch, but nothing moves today.
~My Many Colored Days
Dr. Suess

So many gray days lately. I’m trying to feel upbeat about it, April showers, and May flowers and all of that, but ugh. I want some sun.

My whole house is a mess. I’m in week four sans vacuum cleaner and it’s driving me batty. There is no place to put anything an no where to work. All of my projects keep getting thwarted by little hands getting into everything. My whole yard is a mess. The melting snow has reveled an accumulation of broken toys, discarded building supplies (including the pile of sheet rock that’s currently preventing my daffodils from coming up), and abandoned gardening tools the likes of which would offend even the most slovenly observer. And it just occured to me that my parents and sisters are coming for a visit. Tomorrow.

I’m having one of those days where, no matter which house I’m in, the things that I need at any given moment are in the other house.

I somehow have to figure out how to liter train Maple while living apart from him…that should be interesting.

As it turns out I can’t get the yucky detergent smell out of a ton of fabric that I was planning on using to make the kids spring clothes. I don’t think I’m going to be able to use any of it, including the sweet sheep print, reminiscent of a watercolor painting and the adorable vintage strawberry print, both of which I was planning to use for the boys May Day outfits. *sigh*

And what’s going on outside? Hail. Yup, hail. Perfect. And we’re supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow tonight. The ten-day weather forecast has clouds as far as the eye can see *big sigh*. This is turning into a LONG week.

Despite the dreary weather, or perhaps because of it, I have been getting some crafting done. I finished my nursing dress. I will have someone take some pictures so that I can post the details later. I finished the back of Iain’s Herringbone Sweater and I’m almost done the front (I have one shoulder left to shape). He wanted this for Easter. hmmm, what day is this? Yeah, probably not gonna happen. Last night I started work on some little rag bunnies for Easter baskets. I have them all cut out. One has been sewn and stuffed, but still needs the details added. Hopefully, I should be able to finish them up over the next two nights. I think we will be doing our egg hunt and baskets on Saturday while my family is still here.

Alright, I’m off to go kick myself into shape and try to muster up some spring cheer! First things first, I think I’ll be needing a cup of tea.

unless it’s Gain detergent (that stuff must have a thousand year half life!) you can probably get the odor out by hanging the fabric outside on the clothesline. Worked great on some thrift store finds (but they got rained on and I left them out there for a couple days).

Hanging things out is my number one fall back for smelly things, as washing out detergent stink is just a joke. Unfortunately, I’ve found that because we are so sensitive it usually takes several months of line time and even then 50% of the time it’s STILL too smelly. By the time I can actually bring things inside they are all sun bleached and moth eaten and yucky! I’ve ruined many a nice piece of clothing that otherwise would have been perfectly fine, for anyone but us. It makes me feel guilty and wasteful. I’ve mostly given up on even trying. A couple of these fabrics might be good candidates though. I’ve been experimenting with “airing” things inside the old house. Then I just have to wash out the moldy/musty smell after. We’ll see how it goes.
