Apron Number 1

As I’m sure most of you have realized by now, I’m full of all kinds of crazy plans. There is the plan to have a handmade quilt on every bed in the house (never mind the technicality of learning to quilt… a minor detail, sure to be ironed out in due time). Then there is the plan to have a hand-made throw-rug in every room in the house (hey, those can be knitted, and I know how to do that). There are others of course, but I think that for the sake of my reputation, we’ll stop here.

Today’s post is about the apron plan. There I said it. I have an apron plan. I’m really that strange.

At some point in time, I got it into my head that this year I would make aprons for my loved ones. At least those that would appreciate such a thing.

First up, is my Mom.

At her bridal shower in the mid ’70s, my mother was gifted a half-apron made of terry cloth. She loved the functionality, being able to wipe her hands on it when she was baking, a pocket for measuring spoons and the like. I remember that apron well. She wore it often when I was little, when we were baking cookies together or rolling peanut butter balls. It had pictures of vegetables and bias tape trim, all in shades of harvest gold and avocado green.

She wore it until it wore out. Last year she mentioned to my Dad how much she would like another apron of that sort. He searched high and low for one to give her at Christmas time, but came up empty handed. So, here, for her birthday, is my prettied up version.

Up next on the great apron plan?

One for Elijah, owing almost entirely to this conversation….

E (looking at my Mom’s apron as I pack it up): Mama??
Me: Yes, sweetie?
E (sighing wistfully): I wish you would make me an apron….
Me: Well, I was going to.
E (brightening): Really??
Me: Yeah. Ya know what, yours will be the very next apron I make.
E (half running, half skipping out of the room): IAIN!!! IAIN!!!! GUESS WHAT?!?!?!?!? Mommy says she’s going to make an apron for me next!!!
