Who needs sleep anyway?

I made this one night last week. I couldn’t sleep, so I figured I might as well be productive.

The pattern is Simplicity 0602, view D. The fabric is a floral print that I picked up on clearance for $2 a yard. I didn’t have any lace on hand, so I knitted up a dk (the lightest weight I had around) yarn in a simple lace pattern (cast on 3, *k1 yo k2tog* every row). The hand-knit lace turned out to be too much for my machine to handle, so I ended up hand stitching it on.

I’m honestly not sure how I feel about the finished product. It kind of reminds me of a maternity top that my mom had in the ’80s. I don’t know that it’s particularly flattering, but it is really comfortable.

The fabric itself seems so old-fashioned. I think the act of knitting and hand-sewing the lace kind of endeared it to me, regardless of whether or not I actually look well in it.

On the whole it’s got a kind of nostalgic feel that I find charming. It’s got something of a peasant blouse, hand-made, hippie kind of vibe. Honestly, it makes me think of some of the pictures in “Spiritual Midwifery”. Then again that puts me right back in maternity top territory, doesn’t it?

I think I will definitely used this pattern again, but in the future I’ll probably go down a few sizes. I thought about taking this one in, but then decided that it would make a perfect transition top (early pregnancy and early postpartum) and it might be nice to have something of that sort on hand the next time I’m in need.

Besides, it really makes Galen giggle when I tuck a big bouncy ball up there…
