May Day

~carrying the May Pole~

This weekend we attended the same May Day festival that we’ve been attending for the last several years. I took a lot of pictures (startling, I know), a large percentage of them featuring Galen, since Little Rosebud spent most of the day tucked up in a sling and Iain and Elijah ran off with their friends the very minute that we arrived. Mostly though, I was just taking pictures of the festivities in general; loving the atmosphere and enjoying the fun.

The band played “Màiri’s Wedding” during the entire procession to the grounds. Made me all teary eyed, though I couldn’t even begin to tell you why. You know Galen’s quite convinced that song is about him and is sister! We often call him Galey and well, see both there names are in it…step ye gaily on we go…so…

In dress this year we went for warmth and comfort above festive costumes. It was quite brisk at home that morning, we even felt obliged to have a small fire when we got back home. It was warmer at the festival though, lower elevation and all that.

We usually do flower crowns or something like that, but this year just making and packing up all of the food we needed and getting everyone out the door seemed like enough, you know? But I think that makes it extra special and fun for the kids, so I’m going to make an effort to plan further in advance next year.

The Morris Dancers were superb this year, as always.

It’s looking like Iain and Elijah are going to join a youth dance team in the fall! So exciting for them…

I have lots more to say, but my attentions are needed elsewhere, so I’ll have to let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

Afterward we went to a small art show and then spent some time wandering around town..

What a wonderful celebration! You are lucky to have one like this near to you- I know of nothing like this near where I live.
