Scouring

The following pictures are of the last fleece that we cleaned, approximately two years ago.

It seems the time has come again. I used up the very last of my wool on stuffing Galen’s pillow. I’ve had a raw fleece in a huge trash bag for, oh, about a year now. I very well knew that I would be needing it soon, but I kept putting it off. Scouring a fleece requires my going down to the old house several times a day, for several days. And since going down to the old house at all is something that I passionately avoid (because it’s bad for me, and anyone with me, and quite frankly it hurts, a lot!), it was hard to get motivated. Ah me! But here I sit out of wool, with a stack of Christmas presents on hold for want of stuffing. Time to suck it up at last.

And so, for the next couple of days, our only bathtub will look something like this…

and my hands will constantly smell of lanolin. That’s right folks, Steve is a lucky, lucky man. Oh, yes.

And yes, that is our bathtub. No, it’s not an optical illusion, it was and is, truly pink. As is the sink. And the shower surround is teal, while the walls are bright blue. Bright blue plastic tiles I might add. With black trim and pealing appliques of humming birds. And an off-white and dark green floor. In other words, it is, quite simply, the most hideous bathroom on the planet…or at the very least in the tri-state area. Hey, we did buy the place as a fixer-upper. And this was just one of the rooms that we hadn’t gotten to fixing up yet!

Ugly it may be, but in contrast to our current place, it at least has running water, and so has it’s uses.

And when all is said and done, I will hopefully have enough wool for spinning a bit and stuffing at least a year’s worth of little play things. Our neighbor gives us his leftover fleeces for free. The sheep are raised organically. Even with all the work and grim, it’s a pretty hard deal to beat.

Now if you will excuse me, I have so murky water to go drain…
