I’ve been dreaming of having an excuse to make a pillowcase dress for years now. Yes, it’s true, that is the type of thing that I dream about (you shouldn’t laugh at me, it’s not nice).
This one was kind of unsatisfying though. It’s cute and all that, but it’s not the the vintage-white-linen-pillowcase-with-delicate-trim that I had in mind. The problem with a very old pillowcase being that at some point during it’s lifespan it’s probably been washed in something that would make me ill. This is one area where I really envy other crafters, as my options are limited. I suppose I could seek out a new pillowcase in a similar style, but pillowcases are expensive these days (what is up with that?!?) and besides, that kind of defeats the purpose of this sort of dress, ya know?
This pillowcase was actually my own when I was a child. The ties are made from a pink bias tape that I asked Steve to pick me up for another project. When he brought it home for me I saw that it matched the trim perfectly (though you could never tell from these cruddy pictures) so I used it for this instead. Though I do think that I saved enough to finish that other project as well. Fingers crossed.
The dress is adorable.
And I understand using old is the purpose, but I know mary maxim sells the kits to make the white ones with embroidered flowers(time consuming I know…unless you could find one on etsy). If I was in PA still I’d make a call to a couple of auctioneers that do estate sales and have them watch and bid for me(loved doing that when I had to work on the day of a ‘good’ auction).
Oh, the pillowcase dress is sooooooo pretty.
I love Melanie’s idea of a pillowcase top for my 7 year old little girl.
you lovr having a little girl, domt you? Told you! Fun, huh? Christina
The dress is adorable. Would you care to share instructions?
It’s beautiful!
Hi Melody, I love this dress and have made a few myself. I just think they’re adorable. I always meant to make Solena one and don’t think I ever did….Life get’s too busy I guess.
