The first pinafore

this one

Pattern: a prototype for a pattern I’m working on

Yarn: Cascade Eco+ in red

That’s it, I’m bringing back the pinafore.  Singlehandedly if I have to.

Can there be a sweeter garment??  I think not.

This one came about because a friend of mine was talking about how if she ever had a daughter, she would always dress her in pinafores like Mary from The Secret Garden.  Later that night, as I was laying in bed, nursing Little Rosebud to sleep, I was thinking about that remark.  My thoughts turned to knitting, as the invariably do, and before I knew it there was an entire knitted pinafore designed then and there in my minds eye.

I made this first one the week that we were in Pennsylvania back in April.  It’s taken me so long to share it, because I had plans for a dress to go underneath.  A dress that I’ve still not managed to get to.  But this little white frock came in a box of hand-me-downs from a friend and I figured that the combination work well enough that I could at least get it out here.

It looks a little more frou-frou and frilly with this dress then I had envisioned.  I think it’s mostly that the puffed sleeves of the dress interfere with the lines of the capped sleeves on the pinafore.

The pattern hasn’t been named yet.  There has been much debate around here on this topic.  I’m open to suggestions.  Anyone?

Sharleen- when I suggested Rosebud, my sisters made fun of me and kept making Citizen Kane references! lol I asked if ‘Little Rosebud’ was any better and they said no. But I might end up using it anyway.

    Also under consideration is…

Misselthwaite (after the manor that Mary in the Secret Garden stays at)
Mistress Mary (but Steve and I both think that could be construed as sounding kind of dirty)
Miss Mary (but I can’t help but mentally follow that up with Mac)

and several others that I can’t think of at the moment.

That is just gorgeous. I want the pattern! How is it Melody, that you seem to always live in the most beautiful spot. You are very fortunate.

This is about the cutest thing I have ever seen! I think my 9 year old daughter is too old. . .and my boys wouldn’t appreciate it- darn it!
I think the name should be just “Mary.”

Love it! if I ever have a daughter, I also will dress her in pinafores :-)
How about the “Come to My Garden Pinafore”?

I LOVE THIS! Being born in the mid 50s, we wore pinafores. (My kindergarten pic was taken in one made by my Grandma Pearl.) I totally support your pinafore movement. Girls look adorable in them, and they really are practical. Yours is adorable!
