In the month of October

Some of what we’ve been up to so far this month….

~enjoying watching the change of scenery without having to leave home.

~there have been apples, apples everywhere.

~the season of tractor rides is coming to an end.

~baseball season is over and ended in a sad state of affairs at that.  Football season is upon us.  Since becoming a mother, I have no stomach for professional football.  All I see is other people’s children getting their brains bashed in.  I would never want one of my children to play on a full contact team.  But touch football, with the Papa Bear in the backyard, with all kinds of crazy and creative codes for play calls?  That I can get behind.

~trying to fit in as many slow, exploring walks down quiet country roads as we can before they become narrowed by snowbanks and ice.

~remembering the joy of bouncing on a trampoline.  It seems to get neglected in summer and winter, but come spring and autumn it is a favorite spot to be. (that hair slays me!)

~digging out old sweaters to be worn by new people (pictured above are Elijah’s beach sweater from 2008 and Galen’s birthday sweater from 2010).

~lighting candles with dinner at night.

~simmering soup more days then not.

~savoring the last couple batches of sun tea made with herbs from the garden.

~waiting and watching, as my favorite rose bush gets ready to bloom one last time.

Just curious–how do you make your suntea? It looks so refreshing. Beautiful pics, thanks for sharing!

I love their hair on the trampoline – Fantastic! I feel the same way about football now. I used to love college football pre-children. Now it is exploitation at its finest and a risk I don’t want for anyone’s children.

The sun tea is actually a project of the little ones. They like to fill jars with various herbs from around the garden (mint, lavender, stevia, etc), add water and then leave them in the sun to “brew”. Sometimes they will leave them out for a couple of days. It never gets to be a very strong tea. More like a flavored water, but it’s pleasant and refreshing and they think it’s a lot of fun.

Melody, we are savoring fall in much the same ways, right down to passing down sweaters. And this shows how long I’ve loved your blog: I recognized Galen’s sweater on Mairi before I even read where you identified it as such. :)
