Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, one of our field trips while we were away. I bought an owl pellet for the older kids to dissect, which they found extremely odd. “So why exactly are you buying owl poop?!?!?”
Check out the kid’s section of their site for all kinds of neat resources on birds of prey. We highly recommend the Raptors of Hawk Mountain downloadable coloring book.
This looks like our kinda hike!
Actually we have a “birds hike” in our area too- with a birds museum and Audubon center. Winter boy’s haven. ..
Gorgeous! Will keep this in mind as we will be in PA early next month. We recently dissected several owl pellets. I think my boys were more grossed out by the fact that it isn’t poop but rather vomit (b/c somehow vomit is just more disgusting???). We were lucky enough to find two skulls in ours! And just to add to the lovely conversation, when visiting our local raptor center, I bore witness to an owl coughing (we will say coughing) up its pellet!
Very true that it is technically vomit, but being the indigestible bits, that was kind of analogy they had heard and that it just comes out a bit different. Really there is nothing comparable though, since we don’t have to vomit regularly to rid ourselves of anything.
These photos are amazing.
I recognized where you were before even reading it. One of my favorite places to visit in my home state. Living less than an hour from it meant we visited often. Amazing pictures, Melody. Thank you for sharing.
