Everyone is familiar with the 12 days of Christmas, well this year we celebrated the 3 days of Elijah. Never in the history of the world has a 5th birthday been so thoroughly celebrated. Alright, so that may be a slight exaggeration, but only slight.
When asked whether or not he wanted a party this year Elijah replied that he would very much like a party, with Me-Mom and Pop-pop and Tina and Rachel. The main problem being that most of those people had just taken the last of their vacation time to come up for a visit at Easter. Tina had a bit of extra time she could spare, and thus she was sent up as the family representative. She came the weekend prior to his birthday and left the afternoon before. That meant the Sunday night had to be the night for our “party”. We had sausages roasted over the fire, cake, singing and presents from my side of the family.
This boy made out pretty well! He got a new pair of rain boots, pots and pans for the kitchen set, 3 frizbees and a copy of “Mary Poppins” (the book). One of the presents from Aunt Tina included a small wooden puzzle. Someone asked if he knew what the puzzle was of, assuming he would say “a bird”. Elijah replied with “of course I do, it’s a king fisher”. And of course it was (Tina checked the box… Have I mentioned we’ve got a bit of a bird obsession going on here??)…. He also got a sun-catcher (more birds). My Mom crocheted a play mat for in front of the boys kitchen set, complete with matching pot holders. It’s so beautiful. I assure you this will come up again in a future post. His final present was a clue. He opened it to find a picture of himself jumping on a friend’s trampoline.
Monday morning was more cake for breakfast followed by setting up and then playing on the trampoline.
Tuesday was Elijah’s official birthday. More play on the trampoline. True to his promise, Steve took the training wheels off of Elijah’s bike for his birthday. He took his maiden voyage on a two-wheeler on a dead-end street of a neighboring town. [As a side note, it's now Wednesday and he's totally mastered the bike riding thing. So much for all of mama's worry that it might be too soon!] We had home-made gluten and caisen free pizza for dinner (it wasn’t as bad as it sounds) and fruit for dessert (there had already been quite enough cake eating thank-you-very-much). After dinner we reveled Elijah’s birthday table. I told his rainbow bridge story, he blew out the candles, we sang once again and he opened the last of his gifts. In addition to his birthday crown, there was a new winter hat from Mama and Daddy, a small wooden rabbit and squirrel from Galen, a card from Grandma and Grandpa, and a picture and wooden doll cradle from Iain.
And thus ends the birthday festivities for this year!
