All dressed up (with no where to go…)

My warm weather wardrobe is in a sad state these days. Pathetic. Truly pathetic to be exact. Thing is, we are trying to build a house you know, and if any money is going to be spent on luxuries (like um, clothes that fit and aren’t covered in stains…and holes), then I would rather it be spent on the kids (really and truly I would).
So when an invitation to my friend’s baby shower came, I was rather at a loss as to what to wear.

After rummaging through the back of my old closet, I came out with a hemp/organic cotton blend skirt (by Of the Earth) and a hemp top (Sweetgrass Natural Fibers) that haven’t seen the light of day in a long time.

Now, I loved both of these when I bought them, years ago, on clearance. The blue top got a bit of wear, but it was too big and therefore very unflattering and at times it would literally fall off of me. The skirt I bought right after Galen was born and I had never once worn it. It was a size larger then I thought I needed. I figured I would just take it in a bit and everything would be fine. When it showed up, it turned out that it was A LOT bigger then I needed and I never did get around to taking it in.

Many alterations later (I kid you not, I ended up taking 10 full inches out of the waistline of the skirt) I had something presentable to wear to the shower. (Though, as Steve pointed out the back of the shirt still needs to come in more…. None-the-less, it was much, much better.)

Still, I felt like it needed a little something around the top, but again, I really didn’t want to spend any money. After a bit of brainstorming I came across the Anthropologie inspired capelet pattern on crafster. Sold. I had plenty of yarn left over from making my mother’s gifts. I used a strand of each held together.

The broach was my grandmothers. It’s only costume jewelry, but it’s special to me because it belonged to her. After she died my mother was sorting through Gram’s jewelry box with two of her sisters. She asked them which piece she should put aside for me. They both felt that the cameo was “me”, which I found very interesting. Especially since my taste in jewelry at the time involved plan silver, with very little decoration. I don’t think I would have chosen this broach, and yet there is something about it that appeals to me and I am glad that I have it, though this is the first time I’ve ever worn it.

How was the baby shower? Funny you should ask…as it turns out, my whole family came down with a terrible cold that weekend, and I was unable to make it…

p.s. Ever notice how difficult it is to take good pictures of yourself???

You look beautiful-it’s a great outfit, and you should make Steve take you out for a date in it :-)

37 weeks now! (You should SEE the color of my hair-In a mistaken dye attempt-I was trying to recapture Anne of Green Gables red hair-my hair is now somewhere between watermelon and an orange/cherry popsicle).
