A couple of weeks ago, Elijah approached me asking for some wool. While I acknowledge that this is probably a strange request in other households, the fact is, it’s considered perfectly reasonable here. The only matter left is to determine what kind of wool…felt? yarn? stuffing? roving? jersey?
Turns out that mindlessly twirling a bubble wand had inspired in him a “great plan”. He would turn his wand into a spindle and make yarn (a boy after my own heart!)
… Roving it is!
I pulled out some golden colored roving that I had left over from an old felting project, with no particular plans for the future. It seems that a 5 year old can indeed spin yarn, using nothing but a bubble wand. Who knew?
Never to be left out of any fiber project, Iain managed to fashion his own spindle out of a broken hanger. At some point I offered up the use of my drop spindle, to which he eagerly accepted.
Despite being of excellent quality for a beginner (and a mere 7 year old beginner at that!), the home-spun proved to be too frustrating to knit with. His distress over not being able to knit a little duck for his baby brother inspired me to pull out my needle felting supplies. Let’s just say I think this boy of mine has found a calling. I can’t get over how sweet his project turned out!
Resulting in most of my attempted pictures looking something like this…
“Can Mommy, please see the ducky??? I’ll give it right back… please???“
**scampers away giggling and holding the duck in question tighter then ever**
Ahhhh…there we go….(*cough* never under estimate the power of a food bribe…ahem.)
And what awaited us when we returned from our little photo shoot??
Iain and I talked about it and we think we’re going to put them all in for some quick machine felting just to be sure they will with stand the rough and tumble life that is being loved by a toddler!
adorable!
Keep up the good work.
