View of the house facing North:
Facing East:
When we win the lottery I want to build a screened in porch through this doorway. Really, the only potential problem I see is that we don’t play the lottery…
North-West Corner:
The staircase will be in this corner. The landing will be directly under the window. Eventually, the washer, drier and all of the utilities will be behind a wall under the stairs.
North-East Corner:
This corner will be closed in for a half bath.
Eastern Alcove:
The main living area is entirely open, with the exception of the bathroom. This little bump out is designated as the playroom area. While it will remain completely open, it still has it’s own defined space.
Steve found some gorgeous, huge wooden casement windows for this room and I tracked down a French door that coordinates beautifully. We’ve been scouring the papers and local salvage stores for windows and doors. We’ve had to make some compromises and adjust a few things, but on the whole I think we’ve made out really well. We’ve been paying around a 1/4 of what we would have been paying for the same windows new. The ones for this room have been our greatest find so far!
South-East Corner:
This was origanally going to be the living room area. After some adjustments to the plan, made this morning, I’m thinking I may have to put the dinning table here instead. I haven’t quite figured it all out yet.
South-West Corner:
And here is the kitchen! The plan is for a U shaped counter in this corner, with the sink under the far window.
The way that we are building is, I think, very different from the way that most people would go about a project like this. A lot of what we are doing is based on our resources, what we can find available and when. We are not necessarily working off of a concrete plan and seeking out materials that conform to that. The kitchen is a good example of this. A couple of weeks ago, I found large rectangles of double paned insulated glass for around $20 each. They inspired the idea of transoms to bring in some extra light. So now the kitchen has this whole wrap around transom that never would have happened if I hadn’t been open to whatever came our way.
Wow – it’s amazing that even just a wooden frame can look so good – perhaps it’s the woods that do it – I love houses in the woods! Good luck with the continued building!
Wow! Very cool.
Thanks for your comment on my blog – so nice to know another Anne fan!
