keeps the chill away.
Well, in theory anyway…
Iain’s mittens before felting
After turning the house upside down at the beginning of the season, it was determined that we didn’t have a single matching set of mittens for any of the children (funny, seeing as they all had mittens last year…hmmm). After doing a quick search for mittens to order and learning that it would probably cost me over $50 (with shipping) to cover all of the 30 fingers in question…I came up with a plan. Yes, a mitten plan. (Not to be confused with my apron plan or my quilt plan or the rug plan or….) Because that’s what I do.
Elijah’s mittens “before”
It was a simple plan. It really was. The plan was this…I would knit one mitten a day (seeing as mittens are nice and quick and easy and all that) and before the week was out everyone would have warm hands. There. It’s done.

After felting (and adding a triple thick string… because this mama’s no fool)
See now, it doesn’t get much more simple then that.
So, uhm, hmm, some three, ahem, weeks later, hey look!! There’s mittens!
Fiber Trends Snow Country Mitten pattern, adapted to use up lots of little scraps of yarn, thus making them very unique and completely free to boot.
These mittens were like the greatest hits of Elijah’s knits. There was the yarn leftover from his hat, and yarn from his crown there were several different scraps from his scarf, and the yarn from his old sweater.
Iain’s were more a mish-mosh of various yarns I had around, leaning towards colors that would complement the new coat he will be getting for the holidays (shh!). Both sets were gifted for advent. And I’m told that they are indeed quite warm, so perhaps the plan turned out ok after-all…
And Galen’s? Wwweeeellllll, I will be posting pictures of those just as soon as I figure out what the heck I did with that pattern… so that I can, you know, actually finish the second one. For now one mitten and one old booty seems to suffice!
Magic mittens, how great!!
You do lovely things with yarn!
these mittens are fabulous! loving them! (and your blog is FANTASTIC! i’ll be reading often!)
